space…a vision…imagination…light…evolution…synthesis…finally FORM! form that is a synthesis of the designer’s will to mould space, to introduce light…to have fun by blocking light…form that is enclosure and exclusion at the same time…form that gyrates to the passage of clouds, like gigantic sea anemones frozen in time…form that has a sensuousness evolving out of the function it has to perform…tactility that communicates when lit with the rays of the rising sun…patterns that are subdued when it is overcast…shadows, their length varying – sinuous. spatial quality of form ever changing! form that is alive…
‘architecture is frozen music’ Goethe said…why frozen? IT IS MUSIC!
as a photographer of architecture I have been photographing architecture in various parts of the country…sometimes professionally for various designers and at other times during my travels to document our rich and varied architectural heritage.
architect Louis I. Kahn once said:
"all material in nature,
the mountains and the streams and the air and we,
are made of light which has been spent,
and this crumpled mass called material casts a shadow,
and the shadow belongs to light."
there have always been certain images that have drawn me towards them…things that can be as mundane as a weathered wood carving…or flaking plaster…things that take on a magical quality when light brings them to life…textures that to some might seem quite ordinary have fascinated me by their graphic qualities…any semblance of chiaroscuro draws me towards it, be it the nuances of craft in our vernacular architecture or be it the structured modulations of our modern architecture…abstraction ensues…
